ANALYSIS OF PHARMACOLOGICALLY ACTIVE COMPOUNDS CONTENT IN HERB OF SERADELLA (ORNITHOPUS SATIVUS BROT .)

Journal Title: Postępy Fitoterapii - Year 2016, Vol 17, Issue 1

Abstract

Ornithopus sativus Brot . (seradella or common bird’s foot) is an annual forage crop belonging to Fabaceae family . Other plants belonging to this family are commonly used as medicinal plants or as a source of pharmacologically active compounds such as coumarins, saponins, phenolic acids, alkaloids and flavonoids (especially isoflavonoids) . The aim of the presented study was to identify pharmacologically active compounds in the herb of common bird’s foot . The grounded material (aerial parts of the plant) was extracted in various extrahents and then quantitative tests (for flavonoids, tannins and saponins) as well as 1D and 2D thin layer chromatography for flavonoids, phenolic acids, coumarins, trigonneline and arbutin were performed . In 1D and 2D TLC extracts were separated on Silica-gel plates 60 F254, visualized and then analyzed in UV light . Obtained results indicated, that in analyzed herb, the tannins and flavonoids are present, while there was no sign of saponins . Among all detected substances, some flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, genistein, daidzein, glabridin, biochanin A, rhamnetin, luteolin, apigenin, formononetin and mirycetin), were found in seradela herb . Phenolic acids (caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid) and coumarins (umbelliferone) were also identified in analyzed material . There was no sign of arbutin or alkaloid trigonneline in tested sample .
