Analysis of popularity and directions of Polish equestrian vaulting development

Journal Title: Journal of Animal Science, Biology and Bioeconomy - Year 2017, Vol 35, Issue 3

Abstract

The paper presents and analyzes the level of knowledge and utilization of equestrian vaulting by horse riders and coaches as well as its development perspectives in Poland. The studies were carried out using a 18-question and problems questionnaire survey with a set of 2–8 structured responses. The frequency of each response variant is presented in percentage and significance of differences between the percentages was established using the Parker test. The questionnaire survey was completed by 78 respondents (100%) who were active horse riders. The term “vaulting” was commonly known to the survey participants (97.43%) and most of them (83.33%) found that the development of this domain of motor activities is essential. However, the majority of the respondents indicated the possession of low vaulting skills (42.30%) or its literal lack (29.49%). Besides, over 50% concerned vaulting a gateway to learning horseback riding, while 39.74% found it irrelevant. Amazingly, the respondents, irrespective of their skill level, did not do any vaulting while learning riding or their ability was limited to a great extent. Therefore, equestrian vaulting as a form of motor activities needs wider popularization as the present state of knowledge and the skills of people involved in horse riding and coaching in Poland are insufficient. It would be beneficial to make proposals to the institutions organizing courses for horseback riding coaches to make vaulting theory and practical sessions a compulsory part of basic equestrian training for beginners as well as for riders more advanced in their skills. Such activities could contribute to higher popularity of equestrian vaulting as a sport discipline, upskill riders and coaches performance and improve the general state of physical condition of society.
