Journal Title: Матеріали і дослідження з археології Прикарпаття і Волині - Year 2018, Vol 22, Issue
Abstract
The article deals with the problems of the ancient memorial sculpture on the territory of Volyn’ land. The author distinguishes the category of artifacts (memorable crosses) that replaced the non-existing sacred objects (churches and cemeteries near them). The relationship of the memorial sculpture with the localization of the Christian medieval necropolis, which is considered on the basis of oral, written and archaeological sources, is presented. Several stone crosses have survived on the territory of Volyn’. Since the beginning of the twentieth century researchers considered those crosses as objects of ancient memorial sculpture of the times of the Galicia-Volyn’ state, attributing them to tombstones, memorable and even road signs. Therefore, special attention is paid to the stone cross from village Zymnе Volodymyr-Volynskyi district Volyn’ region, discussions about the origin and chronology of which have lasted for more than a century now. At the same time, the engagement of new results of research, mainly archaeological, will allow not only to clarify the chronology of stone crosses, their morphology and functional purpose, but also to outline the prospects for future research, which determines not only the relevance of the topic, but also its novelty.
