ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPOSITION OF THE MUSEUM FOR PREHISTORY AND PROTOHISTORY IN KYIV (1942–1943)

Abstract

In 1942, the archaeological collections of the Central Historical Museum in Kyiv (now – National Museum of History of Ukraine) were packed by employees of the Reichsleiter Rosenberg Taskforce and transported from the territory of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra to the premises of former Lenin’s Museum (at the address Volodymirska 57). In this building was organized the Museum for Prehistory and Protohistory. In this museum archaeological exposition was established, which included nine big exposition halls and covered the historical period from Paleolithic to Kyivan Rus. The last hall was devoted to Ukrainian ethnography, which had to demonstrate vestiges of prehistoric ages in the traditional way of life of Ukrainian peasants. The exposition was based on the concept that German tribes influenced on the cultural development of peoples who lived on the territory of Ukraine from prehistoric times. The Museum exposition was opened only for German visitors, and had a purpose to be a part of ideological training for German soldiers and employees. Documentary evidences about that exposition could help to create more clear view of the destiny of the archaeological collections during Hitler’s occupation of Kyiv.
