RESCUING ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCHES IN ZHOVKVA SUBURB OF LVIV

Abstract

Results of archaeological researches in Lviv, Pidmurna st. 5, conducted by expedition of Scientific-research center “Rescuing archaeological service” of the Institute of archaeology of NAS of Ukraine led by N. Voitovych. Territory under researches is situated in north part of historical area of Lviv. In north part of this locality trench is dug out 10×2,6 m by size. Throughout whole area upper layer is represented by constructional garbage, which is deposited on the depth of 2,5 m. Maximal depth of location of cultural layers is about 6,0 m. The widest layer from XV–XVІ centuries has thickness about 1,8 m. On the depth of 2,5 m and 3,0–3,2 m foundation of the building from Austrian period was found. During researches on depth of 3,55 m wooden pipe from XVII century was discovered. It was tightly covered by cap, made of wooden plank. General length of water pipe, uncovered within the trench, is about 7,9 m. In north-western part of the trench one (northern) side of wooden building of carcass-pillar construction was partially discovered. It can be dated back not earlier than to XVІІ century. On the level of mainland, which is situated on depth of 5,3–6,0 m, six objects from different chronological periods – XІV–XVІ centuries – were found. Object 1 contains the largest amount of artifacts. Two ceramic pipes and ceramic ware from XV century were collected there. In general numerous mobile archaeological material from ХІІІ–ХІХ centuries was discovered within the trench. It is represented by metal, leather, glass, stone and ceramic products. Most of them is dated back to XV–XVІ centuries. In particular, leather shoes, metal tools (drill, axe, knife, nails) and ceramic ware deserve special attention.
