SMALL HILL-FORTS-SANCTUARIES OF SLAVS

Abstract

Group of small round hill-forts was distinguished in the first time among the sites of Smolensk region in 1920 by A. Lyaudanski, who suggested that they were used for ceremonial purposes. In the postwar period V. Sedov dated them back to VIII–X centuries and substantiated the religious function of them. But because some of these hill-forts-sanctuaries of Smolensk region are situated in low places, both these researchers considered that such location is the feature of the sites of this type. However, later small hill-forts-sanctuaries, located on the high hills, were discovered and examined in the Middle Dniester region and headwaters of Prut River in Western Ukraine. Almost all of them were surrounded by synchronous settlements and were the cult centres of large groups of settlements. They stopped to exist after the Christianization. In Belarus, a basic site of this type is a hill-fort-sanctuary Verkhovlyany that appeared in X century. Sanctuary of the same type Malochki is situated in Eastern Poland. In addition, small round hill-forts-sanctuaries, similar by the basic features can be recognized among a number of other sites on the territory of Belarus, Polish Pomerania, the former lands of Polabian Slavs and even in Latvia (where they may be associated with the process of penetration of some groups of ethnic Slavs into the different ethnic environment).
