BURIAL GROUNDS OF EARLY ROMAN PERIOD (SUB-CARPATHIAN REGION): GENDER APPROACH OF GRAVE GOODS DIVERSITY

Abstract

The material culture of mortuary practices is one of the central sources at our disposal in the archaeological interpretation of past societies. The purpose of this article is thus to present a number of theoretical considerations deemed relevant to the study of grave goods. The results of the investigation of grave goods from Early Roman burial grounds of Sub-Carpathian region has been analyzed – burial grounds Zvenygorod, Hruniv, Bolotnia, Verhnia Lypytsia, Zavallia and single graves Chyzhykiv, Kolokolyn, Luchka, Rozhnevi Polia, Khotymyr. Comparative analysis comprises the results of archaeological and antropological study of burial grounds of Przeworsk, Lipica and Dacian cultures. Grave goods from sites of Sub-Carpathian region include of pottery, fibulae, buckles, jewellery (necklace, bracelets), toiletry accessories (razors, mirrors, scissors), weapon (swords, finials, bosses, spurs), tools (steels, whetstones, knifes, spindle whorls, awls, needles) and others. A review of previous and comparative analysis to grave goods is given, with a focus on perspectives informed by practice theory as well as ritual theory.
