CITIES OF THE SECOND HALF OF XIII - XIV CENTURIES BETWEEN THE UPPER SIRET AND MIDDLE DNIESTER RIVERS: HISTORY OF RESEARCHES AND STAGES OF FORMATION

Abstract

The article deals with problems of historiography of the medieval towns between the rivers Upper Siret and Middle Dniester. The stages of making the urban centres of the designated territory, especially Khotyn, Khmeliv, Tsetsyno and Gorodok on Cheremosh, were analyzed. Have been traced the contribution of Ukrainian scientists in determining of the time of appearance of cities and the origins of their names. Since the medieval cities were not only strongholds, but also socio-economical, political, cultural and educational centers. The attention of native and foreign scholars to these does not die. Today, unfortunately, the cities of the second half of the XIII–XIV century on this territory haven’t been explored sufficiently. Basically, were studied (but not totally) the citadels. The trading quarter of these cities yet remained unattended by archaeologists. We find out about the development of these cities mostly from the written documents. Therefore, in this article the author confined himself to a general overview of the problems of origination and development of this category of settlements, that is localized Khotyn, Tsetsyno and not localized for today Khmeliv. As seen from the contents of the article, the urban processes on the territory between the rivers Siret and Dniester were developing in the after mongolian time as prolongation of the tradition of Ancient Rus period. Future deployment of the archaeological studies of medieval towns on the designated area will be complement by written sources, which will allow to refine the time of formation them as urban settlement structures, the circumstances of building of the first fortifications, more deeply reveal the origination of the name and so on.
