Journal Title: Матеріали і дослідження з археології Прикарпаття і Волині - Year 2017, Vol 21, Issue
Abstract
The present article opens the unknown page of the history of Museum collections of Ancient Egyptian objects in Kyiv during the late 30th of XX century. The visual primary sources are the main focus of researching; it is the collection of the negatives on glass of the Scientific Archive of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. There are two sets of the negatives in this collection. The first one (32 negatives) presents copies of several illustrations of some books, written in German, English, French, Italian, Polish and Russian. These negatives seem to be a part of illustrations prepared for unknown book, which studied the history and culture of Ancient Egypt. The second set of negatives (108 objects) appear to belong to a group of photographic images made in process of restoration of Ancient Egyptian objects in the Restoration Workshop of the All-Ukrainian Museum City (Kyiv) since 1935. The objects represented on the negatives are wooden coffins, a box for shabties, mummies and their parts etc., 12 objects can be identified, in particular, two wooden coffins of Saint Vladimir University of Kyiv, one of them originates from the so-called Lot No 6 of Khedive’s of Egypt gift to different countries in 1893–1894. Based on the visual material from the Archive as well as on textual documents from other archives, the conclusion was made that restoration of Ancient Egyptian objects had been made by famous Ukrainian painter and art restorer M. Kasperovych. This person (who is known as an art restorer of European and Ukrainian paintings and icons) was arrested and murdered in 1938 during the repressions organized by Soviet authorities against Ukrainian intellectual elite. So his work and his heritage have been forgotten for decades, and have been open anew just now. The present paper allows observing some episodes of the restoration.
