ANEMIA OF CHRONIC DISEASES: ARE HAEMOGLOBIN AND PERIODONTITIS RELATED?
Journal Title: IDA Ludhiana's Journal - Le Dentistry - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Anemia of chronic diseases (ACD), like chronic periodontitis is the second most prevalent cause of anemia and occurs in patients with acute or chronic immune activation. There have been speculations that periodontitis does result in a low grade systemic inflammation, thereby leading to erythropenia and subsequently, loweredhemoglobin concentrations. Thus, the aim of the present study was to estimate and compare hemoglobin levels of subjects with healthy periodontium and with chronic periodontitis.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 patients of either sex in the age group of 30 to 55 years having a minimum of 20 natural teeth and a probing pocket depth >5mm (for chronic periodontitis group) without any systemic conditions were selected and divided into two groups:Group I- 50 subjects with healthy periodontium.Group II- 50 subjects with chronic periodontitis.Under aseptic conditions, venous blood samples were obtained and haemoglobin levels were assessed .the data obtained was analyzed statistically.RESULTS:The mean hemoglobin levels obtained were 12.66 ±1.41 gm/dl for Group 1 and 11.32±1.85 gm/dl for Group 2. This difference was found to be statistically highly significant (p=0.0004).CONCLUSION: Subjects with chronic periodontitis can be considered to be at risk for mild anemia of chronic disease.
