Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Gene Polymorphism And Hypertension In North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, India
Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: The angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene insertion/deletion polymorphism has been identified as a potential genetic risk factor for essential hypertension. The angiotensin-converting enzyme in humans has an insertion-deletion (I/D) polymorphic state in intron 16 on chromosome 17q23. This polymorphism has been widely investigated in different diseases. In this study we aimed to investigate the I/D genotype frequency in hypertensive cases in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, India . The purpose of the present study is to investigate the association of the insertion/deletion polymorphism of the ACE gene with essential hypertension in patients of north coastal Andhra Pradesh . Materials and Methods: We designed a case control study, where 100 hypertensive cases were studied for ACE I/D polymorphism against 100 age and sex matched controls taken from the general population. The polymorphisms of Angiotensine Converting Enzyme gene were investigated using polymerase chain reaction for detection of I/D genotype. Fishers Chi square test was used for calculation of P value and odds ratio (OR). Results: We found the frequency of DD genotype to be 46.0% (46/100), ID 29.0% (29/100) and II 25.0% (25/100) in 100 hypertensive cases. Subjects having D allele have 35 times more risk of complication than I allele (odds ratio: 7.12; CI: 3.5-14.2; 2=35.94, P < 0.0000001). Conclusions: The ACE I/D genotype is positively associated with hypertension in our population. Moreover, individuals who are homozygous for the D allele of the ACE gene are more likely to have essential hypertension and its complications. KEYWORDS: ACE, I/D Polymorphism, hypertension.
