The Emotional Quotient and Personality Status of Medical and Engineering Students

Abstract

Aim:The aim of the study was to explore and correlate the emotional quotient and personality between the medical and engineering students. Materials and Methods: The study was a cross sectional study which included 205 Medical students and 247 engineering students between 18-21 years of age from Kanchipuram district. The questionnaires were given to the students which comprised of 33 questions related to emotional quotient and 60 questions related to personality. The emotional quotient was assessed by using Emotional Intelligence scale and personality by Neo 5 factor inventory form. Results: There was a significant difference in neuroticism, openness to experience and conscientiousness among the medical and engineering students with respect to their course of study. There was also a significant difference in the neuroticism as they advanced in age. Conclusion: Medical students have lower neuroticism and conscientiousness levels and are more open to experience than the engineering students. The older students have higher neuroticism levels than the younger students. There is no significant difference in the emotional quotient of the medical and engineering students.
