Abstract
Introduction: Urgency, excessive straining orfeeling of incomplete evacuation are the common complaints in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) that may suggest anorectal dysfunction and rectal hypersensitivity. Aim of study: To evaluate the influence of gender and age on anorectal function in IBS. Material and methods: Anorectal manometry and rectal balloon distension test using a four lumen water perfused catheter were performed in 66 IBS patients selected according to the Rome II Criteria (39 F, 27 M; mean age 41, range 19-65 years) and 20 control subjects (12 F, 8 M; mean age 41, range 20-65 years).
