Anthracyclines: etiopathogenic basis of their cardiotoxicity

Abstract

Cancer is a serious health problem of humanity, although there is currently an increase in expectations of a cure thanks to therapeutic advances and they are anthracyclines are undoubtedly the most widely prescribed cytotoxic agent despite their cardiotoxicity of 5% to 23% of cases. The present literature review aimed toexplain the etiopathogenic mechanisms of anthracyclines in the genesis of cardiotoxicity. For this, a total of 22 bibliographic sources were consulted, including articles from magazines, books and others, accessed through the main information managers. It was concluded thatanthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity is due to different mechanisms that are related to each other, these are the production of free radicals, defects in mitochondrial structure and function, alteration in calcium and iron homeostasis and alteration in gene expression.
