Abstract

The article presents the results of initial anthropological analysis of bone remnants excavated during archaeological studies conducted in Wały gen. Sikorskiego st. in Toruń in the years 2005–2006. The material consists of male, female and children skeletons of people died in various age. The studied bones come from at least 223 individuals. The level of their preservation is differential, generally can be defined as medium. The studied population does not vary to a high degree from other ones living in the Middle Ages in other urban centers like, e.g. Gdańsk, Wrocław. It is indicated by, among others, analysis of death increase in particular age categories and the bodies’ heights. The skeletons bore traces of numerous degenerative changes of various intensity level. They include spine and limb joints degenerative changes, infection traces (inflammations of periosteum, ostitis), healed traumas (skull bone fractures and the others), dental caries. Occurrence of features regarded as, so-called unspecific stress markers (cribra orbitalia, pathological bone porosity, hypoplasia of tooth enamel). Further detailed osteometric and paleopathological studies of bone material are planned.
