Abstract

The article presents initial study results of the oldest tiles from Toruń being deposited in the collection of the District Museum in Toruń. They originate from archaeological exploration conducted within the ruins of the Teutonic Castle and the streets: Kopernika 11/13, Podmurna 53, Podmurna 60. The earliest dated tiles come from 2nd half of 14th century and consist of pot and bowl tiles with plain body walls, only slightly bent towards their bottom space and quadrilateral holes. They had been manufactured of iron clay with admixture of medium granulated break-stone in technique of wheel throwing and baked both in reduction and oxidation atmosphere. Tile walls are not glazed and deprived of ornaments. The oldest cylindrical tile comes from Kopernika street 11/13 and is dated from the beginning of 15th century belonging to examples of chamber ones covered with ornamental opening plate. Similar tiles coming from 2nd half of 15th century are also known from Köln. Among plate tiles the oldest are filling items with St. Dorothy’s image and wedding scenes as well as niche tiles decorated with plant ornamentation. Those examples similarly to pinnacles are dated from the 2nd half of 15th century.
