Weaponry craftsmanship in Toruń in the Middle Ages and in the verge of Modern Times

Journal Title: Archaeologia Historica Polona - Year 2011, Vol 19, Issue 0

Abstract

Studying weaponry craftsmanship in mediaeval and the beginning of Modern Times belongs to a very difficult tasks. The literature reveals lack of elaborations treating about armory production in craftsmen workshops operating in the city. Although mediaeval and early Modern Toruń craft was described relatively completely, the problem of armament manufacturing was rather neglected. Publications on our disposal do not deliver detailed information concerning Torunian manufacturers of armory. We also know very little about the range of weaponry production and its choice. The article presents the process of creating and organizing Toruń craft guilds connected with armory production in the comparative background. Questions referring to numbers of particular production groups and topography of inhabiting guild masters responsible for armory production in Toruń from the end of 14th to 17th c were also described. The attempt of establishing kinds and types of weapon produced in the city in 14th–15th c was undertaken as well. The base of the debate were all source categories: archaeological, written and iconographical.
