Changes in relief and surface geological structure of Mokre suburb in Toruń in historic times
Journal Title: Archaeologia Historica Polona - Year 2011, Vol 19, Issue 0
Abstract
The article presents attempts of reconstruction of original configuration and surface geological structure of the area of Mokre suburb in Toruń – formerly Mokre village, incorporated into the city borders in 1906 by cartographic (historic-cartographic, geostatic) and field work survey methods. Natural landscape of Mokre suburb, very monotonous at present, as long as several decades ago was diversified by dunes, one of the biggest in the city area. Its character had been influenced by wetland till at least 18th c, which gave that part its historic name (fig. 10). When Mokre was incorporated into Toruń area (1906) the majority of its surface configuration preserved its natural character until the half of 20th c. Due to geological structure, both dunes and terrace slopes were very susceptible for degradation caused by leveling preparing the described area for different kinds of urban building and sand exploitation for masonry. Single fragments of dunes appear contemporarily under small dwelling houses and household buildings around Legionów and Pod Dębową Górą streets and the cemetery in Koniuchy st. Wetland, which existence had substantial impact on natural suburb character has not preserved until present times. Biogenic sediments existing up till now are their fossil records. Disappearance of wetland since the beginning of 19th c was the result of substantial lowering original level of underground waters caused by its exploitation, land improvement connected, among others, with fortification systems expanding as well as development of industrial-storage and dwelling character building. Biogenic sediments remained as traces of wetland appear at present in form of islands, first of all at the areas of gardens, which preserve them in a ‘natural’ way.
