Journal Title: Archaeologia Historica Polona - Year 2011, Vol 19, Issue 0
Abstract
In the Middle Ages and Modern Times the area of site 114 was a part of the biggest Torunian Chełmińskie suburb, being crafts and economic back-up of the city. It housed, among others, slaughters, stalls, St. Laurence church with the cemetery adjoining, St. Laurence hospital, Benedictine nun monastery and the Holy Cross church. Present state of knowledge referred to St. Laurence place based mainly on historic query and to a lesser extent on archaeological studies. Location of St. Laurence church and the Holy Cross church, connected with the Benedictine monastery was appointed basing on archaeological surveys conducted in the 80’s of 20th c. Those statements were corrected in the years 2005–2007 during next excavation works. At that time northern inside wall of the church nave (trench 1/05) was revealed together with skeleton cemetery in its direct vicinity (trench 2/05). Those discoveries confirmed burial function of the building and enabled to identify architectonic remains with the body of St. Laurence church. The most interesting excavations were made in trench 3/05–06, which uncovered the relics of two buildings preserved to the height of 1,3 m. One of them must have served household purposes, while spatial configuration of the other let us observe two stages of its exploitation. Circumferential walls and hypocaust may have been erected in the half of 14th c and interior divisions and circumferential walls’ reinforcing had been made about a half of 15th c. Comparing the results of historic, cartographic and archaeological studies it can be stated, that the relics of gothic building excavated in trench 3/05–06 had originally been associated with Benedictine monastery existing until 1414. After the monastery demolishing using and supporting its ruins, a hospital of St. Laurence was erected in that place about 1440. The area of about 7 ares has been researched during archaeological works until now. Unfortunately, the complete plan of the monastery and the hospital has not been uncovered, the part of crafts – household has been studied to a small extent being limited only to confirmation of its existence.
