Anti-Windup Strategy for an LQ Current Controller with Oscillatory Terms for Three-Phase Grid-tie VSCs in SMES Systems

Journal Title: Power Electronics and Drives - Year 2016, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Two main strategies to face the windup in the power converter control with oscillatory terms have been introduced in literature. The first idea is based on control damping of the resonator in second-order generalized integrator structure. The second idea it is to implement saturation in the resonant terms based on reduced-order generalized integrator structure. In this paper, a newly designed anti-windup mechanism is developed for the linear-quadratic current control. A newly developed active damping mechanism based on simple moving average method is proposed. Material and methods: The developed anti-windup mechanism has been verified in the simulation study for transient and steady-state conditions. Results: As presented numerical results demonstrate, the use of novel SMA-based method of adjusting the damping in oscillatory terms, effectively contributes to reduction of exceeding the control signals beyond the accepted level. Conclusions: Proposed active damping mechanism for the oscillatory term in conjunction with the classic integrator clamping method used in proportional-integral path increases the control system performance.
