ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF SOME MEDICINAL PLANTS AGAINST CAR-BAPENEM-RESISTANT ACINETOBACTER BAUMANNII ISOLATED FROM PATIENTS
Journal Title: European Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Research - Year 2019, Vol 6, Issue 7
Abstract
Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii has currently emerged as a major threat leaving behind no antibac-terial treatment options. Therefore, current research has been focused on finding out effective natural plants with antibacterial activity against these bacteria. Water, methanol, petroleum ether and ethanol extracts of Polygonum hydropiper L, Barringtonia acutangula L., Acacia nilotica L. and Abrus precatorious L. were tested against four carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii isolates (Ab1, Ab5, Ab9 and Ab13). Polygonum hydropiper L. extracts were found more effective although other extracts also showed some activity. Ethanol extract of Polygonum hydropiper L. showed highest activity with 17.83 mm zone of inhibition. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the extracts ranged from 7.81 g/mL to 15.63 g/mL and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of the extract ranged from 31.25 g/mL to 62.50 g/mL against the four isolates. Ethanol extract of Polygonum hydropiper L. may be a potential source of antibacterial treatment against carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii.
