Antidiabetic and Antioxidant Effect of Ethanolic Root Extract of Boerhaavia diffusa in Streptatozocin-Induced Diabetic Rats
Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 2
Abstract
The ethanolic root extract of Boerhaavia diffusa have potent antidiabetic activity that reduces blood sugar level in Streptatozocin-Induced diabetic rats. The present study was carried out to investigate ntihyperglycemic effect of Boerhaavia diffusa using Glybenclamide as a reference drug. Fasting blood glucose level, serum insulin level, lipid profiles, and biomarkers enzymes were evaluated in normal and diabetic rats. While the liver glycogen level and kidney and liver antioxidant system also were additionally evaluated. Supplementation of this extract by gavage significantly reduces the fasting blood glucose level. Moreover this supplementation significantly increases the glycogen level in liver (25.74 ± 1.52) as compare to diabetic control (11.31 ± 0.63) (P<0.001). Elevated serum enzymatic antioxidants were diminished significantly by the treatment of Boerhaavia diffusa in respect to diabetic group. All the above mentioned parameters were restored to the control level.
