Anxiety and depression in patients with diabetes - literature review

Journal Title: Current Problems of Psychiatry - Year 2013, Vol 14, Issue 2

Abstract

Anxiety and depression are especially prevalent in diabetes. Patient’s adaptation to self-treatment of diabetes guarantees an adequate glycaemic control, which in turn prevents or helps in the treatment of anxiety and depression. The aim of the study is to review the literature on the impact of anxiety and depression on patients with diabetes (type 1 and 2). The literature review of the Pubmed database, national and international articles from the years 2006 - 2012 regarding the subject matter was made. The development of anxiety and depression also depends on socio-demographic factors. It was noted that the active type of strat-egy for coping with stress contributes to improvement of the patient's emotional state. The occurrence of depressed mood and anxiety among diabetics is a result of health and socio-demographic factors. The results of analysed research studies indicate that social support is very important for diabetics (especially young adults with type I diabetes). It causes a reduction of depressive symptoms and facilitates psychosocial adaptation to illness. Adaptation and motivation of the patient to be active, contributes to adequate glycaemic control, and thus has a positive effect on the results of treatment of depression and anxiety.
