Application of chicken microsatellite markers to molecular monitoring of the experimental population of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica)
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2013, Vol 31, Issue 1
Abstract
Chromosome homology is highly conserved between chicken (Gallus gallus) and Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) and a few chromosome rearrangements occurred in the evolution of these two species. Microsatellite markers are invaluable tools in molecular biology for genome analysis, mapping, search for quantitative trait loci, and phylogenetic studies. In the current study, 25 microsatellite sequences for molecular analysis of 98 Japanese quail (49 of each sex) were used including 11 chicken microsatellite markers which had been analysed by other authors in chicken genome research. Eighty-two percent (9/11) of chicken primer pairs amplified individual loci in Japanese quail and together with the remaining primers were polymorphic. The HE and PIC values indicated that the most (14/23) of the selected microsatellite sequences are useful as genetic markers. The study contributed to a better understanding of the Japanese quail genome, and the successful cross-species amplification led to identification of polymorphic markers that will be indispensable for identifying homologous regions on chromosomes.

Unique variations of SRY gene result in distinct patrilineal phylogeny of Capra hircus and other domestic Bovidae
Patrilineal phylogeny of Beichuan White goat and other domestic Bovidae was inferred from 5´- UTR and coding region of SRY gene. Variation analysis revealed 208 variable sites, meanwhile, a 50-bp fragment inserted downst...
Operant conditioning of dogs (Canis familiaris) for identification of humans using scent lineup
Training of dogs to distinguish individual human scent has no well-established scientific basis. The aim of the study was to evaluate the progress made over three consecutive training phases and to compare the training...
Evaluation of the metabolic status of Simmental dairy cows in early and mid lactation
Fifteen early-lactation cows and 15 mid-lactation cows were chosen for the analysis. Blood samples were collected to measure the beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), triglycerides (TG), glucose...
Forming of temperature-humidity index (THI) and milk production of cows in the free-stall barn during the period of summer heat
Evaluated were changes of temperature and relative air humidity inside a free-stall barn affecting the welfare of cows of three technological groups during a hot summer. The effects of selected microclimate parameters of...
Cathepsin mRNA level in bovine cumulus cells fails to be a good marker of oocyte quality
Cathepsins (CTS) are lysosomal cysteine proteinases, of which elevated transcript content is attributed to the reduced quality of oocytes. The aim of this study was to investigate whether transcript content of three CTS...
