Comparison of different Hungarian Grey herds as based on microsatellite analysis
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2014, Vol 32, Issue 2
Abstract
The present study aimed at assessing the genetic position of the Hungarian Gray population. Hungarian Grey cattle kept at different farms in Hungary have been sampled (34 herds, n=3,187 in the period of 2009-2011) to investigate their genetic relationship based on analysis of allelic variation at eleven microsatellite loci. The mean observed heterozygosities per herd were above a moderate degree (0.60-0.80). Calculation of pairwise genetic distances and analysis of the history of herds revealed that among the most closely related herds we can find those, which are the core of the current Hungarian Gray population. The results of the population differentiation showed that all Hungarian Gray herds were significantly different from each other. In most cases (22 herds) FST values were within a range of low degree of genetic differentiation (0.003-0.050), while the remaining 12 herds differed from the central population by FST values of 0.060-0.119. Principal coordinate analysis, assignment tests and dendrograms all suggest that there are mainly two different groups among Hungarian Grey herds. Structure analysis has yielded K=3 as the most probable number of clusters. Based on the private allelic richness, genetic distance and FIS values identified were 12 herds where more attention should be paid by the management to avoid genetic drift and to preserve genetic diversity. The results presented could also contribute to the proper selection of animals for further whole genome scan studies of Hungarian Grey.

Relation between fearfulness level and maternal behaviour in Arab mares
The study aimed at testing the hypothesis that mares’ fearfulness is a potential factor differentiating the level of their maternal behaviour. Twenty purebred Arab mares were used. In part one of the study fearfulness of...
The effect of amaranth seed added to the standard diet upon selected meat quality traits in the quail
The study was conducted on 36 female Pharaoh quails (3 groups, 12 birds per group). The experiment covered the 7th to the 20th weeks of birds’ lives. The control group (I) received standard feed formulated for adult quai...
Immunohistochemical distribution of c-Kit and its gene expression via real-time PCR in skin tissue of goats with a black and white coat colour
The signaling pathway of the stem cell factor and its receptor, c-Kit, plays an important physiological role in melanogenesis. The expression of c-Kit was investigated using real-time quantitative PCR and immunohistochem...
Efficacy of free-choice feeding of ground wheat or whole grain wheat and protein concentrate to turkeys
The aim of this study was to determine body weight gains, feed intake and feed consumption patterns in turkeys, when offered a choice of various feed ingredients (protein-fat-mineral-vitamin concentrate pellets, ground-p...
The effect of calpastatin polymorphism (CAST/HinfI and CAST/Hpy188I) and its interaction with RYR1 genotypes on carcass and pork quality of crossbred pigs
The aim of the study was to recognize the polymorphism in the calpastatine genes (CAST/HinfI and CAST/Hpy188I) and in the ryanodine receptor gene (RYR1) as well as to establish a possible linkage between the genes varian...
