Application of chitosan and its modified derivatives for removing of heavy metal ions from industrial wastes

Journal Title: CHEMIK nauka-technika-rynek - Year 2014, Vol 68, Issue 1

Abstract

This paper presents the results of elimination of selected heavy metal ions from model industrial wastes with the use of sorption methods. The comparison of sorption properties of chitosan as well as its modified derivative in the form of chitosan/ aspartic acid copolymer cross-linked with ethylene glycol synthesized under microwave radiation was a main scope of the research. Moreover, synthesis parameters and preparation method of previously mentioned copolymer are presented. The sorption process was carried out in a static way at room temperature in solutions containing separate metal ions such as Fe2+/3+, Zn2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ during 12 hours and 168 hours. After 24 hours for chitosan and 70 hours for modified derivative almost complete elimination rate of mercury and lead ions from solution was achieved. For iron and zinc ions after 7 days of sorption, that value reached 46% and 81% (chitosan) as well as 30% and 35% (copolymer), respectively.
