Application of ion chromatography for determination of chlorine content in solid biomass for power sector

Abstract

One of the crucial parameters deciding whether give type of biomass might be used in thermo-chemical conversion is chlorine content. This element, together with nitrogen and sulphur, is a main source of acidic compounds causing corrosion of installations and environmental pollution. Many different analytical methods are used for determination of chlorine content in biomass, including titration, spectrometry, chromatography, X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) and high-temperature oxidizing combustion with electrochemical detection. The scope of this study is the determination of chlorine content using ion chromatography in biomass samples, including those used in power industry. At the same time obtained results were compared with chlorine contents determined by means of potentiometric titration with use of automatic titrator. The statistical analysis shows differences in accuracy and precision of compared methods. Ion chromatography method shows greater accuracy, while calculated values of Snedecor’s F-test show that the titration method has smaller precision than chromatography method.
