Archetypal Images of a Tree and a Man in Ivan Bunin’s Story “God’s Tree”
Journal Title: Науковий вісник Міжнародного гуманітарного університету. Серія «Філологія» - Year 2018, Vol 32, Issue 1
Abstract
The article deals with Ivan Bunin’s prose of the 1930s and in particular with his story “God’s Tree” from the storybook of the same name. This storybook retains the specific features of the writer’s late prose, i.e. the combination of different chronotopes within the same work, the subjectivisation of narrative strategies, the usage of image-mythologemes and image-archetypes as the basic system of morality and virtues. The image of the “God’s tree” becomes an archetypal symbol that embodies the essence of Bunin’s character, i.e. to follow the laws of his own nature and his soul’s pursuit.
