Arrangements of mass cycles in the creative output of Marcin Żebrowski and Johann Alois Lamboy

Journal Title: Notes Muzyczny - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 5

Abstract

Monastery of the Order of St Paul in Jasna Góra has performed an important role in the history of Polish music culture. A vocal and instrumental ensemble, the peak development of which fell in the second half of the 18th century, added splendour to liturgies conducted in the chapel of the miraculous image of Our Lady and in the nearby basilica. A similar ensemble existed at the Cistercian monastery in Lubiąż (Leubus), the largest and most powerful centre of monastic life in Silesia. Both ensembles performed works by European composers and also by musicians who wrote their music for the local sanctuary. The article is an attempt to compare composition skills of M. J. Żebrowski, the most outstanding representative of the Jasna Góra ensemble, and J. A. Lamboy, an organist and teacher from Lubiąż. The analysis of liturgical repertoire from the same period enabled the author of the article to indicate similarities and differences in working with identical liturgical texts by creators originating from different centres. The results of the preliminary research also fit within the broader context of studies on the creative output of Central European monastery ensembles in the min-18th century.
