Assessing OCTA changes in morphology and structure of retinal microvascular bed in patients with exudative AMD
Journal Title: Офтальмологический журнал - Year 2019, Vol 0, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) enables measuring characteristics of the retinal microvascular bed such as vascular plexus density and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area. Purpose: To assess the OCTA changes in morphology and structural characteristics of the retinal microvascular bed in patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Materials and Methods: Forty seven patients with exudative AMD (51 eyes) and 13 healthy controls (22 eyes) were included in the study. OCTA was used to measure superficial plexus FAZ area (SPFA), deep plexus FAZ area (DPFA), vessel density and retinal thickness. Patients were divided into three groups based on the ratio of SPFA to DPFA: Group 1 (SPFA/DPFA < 0.6; 15 eyes), Group 2 (0.6 ≤ SPFA/DPFA < 0.8; 17 eyes), and Group 3 (SPFA/DPFA ≥ 0.8; 19 eyes). Results: Deep plexus FAZ area in all groups of patients was increased and superficial plexus FAZ area in Group 3 was significantly increased compared to controls. Patients in Group 1 exhibited mostly apparent signs of retinal edema and minimal alterations in the retinal microvascular bed. Patients in Group 2 had greater retinal thickness, but moderately lower plexus vessel density compared to controls. Patients in Group 3 had substantially lower superficial plexus vessel density and insubstantially altered retinal thickness compared to controls. Conclusion: OCTA enables assessing the changes in morphology and structure of the retinal microvascular bed, measuring FAZ area and vessel density in patients with exudative AMD.

The effect of high intraocular pressure on enzymatic antioxidant system of uveal tissues in rabbits with experimental allergic uveitis
Background. Determining the influential mechanisms of high intraocular pressure on the development and course of non-infectious anterior uveitis is a relevant but understudied issue which requires a detailed study. Of pa...
Serum VEGF levels in infants at risk for developing retinopathy of prematurity
Background: Because excessive growth of abnormal retinal vessels in the developing eye of the premature infant underlies retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), it may be hypothesized that a change in vascular endothelial grow...
Optical features of light passing through refractive structures of the eye
The features of light refraction in the anterior segment of the eye and after dispersion on the posterior surface of the cornea are considered. It is shown that the cornea refracts the light as a weakly scattering lens....
Relationship between diabetic retinopathy and cerebral perfusion in type 2 diabetes mellitus
Background: Compared to patients without diabetic retinopathy (DR), those with DR demonstrate better cognitive performance. It is therefore reasonable to hypothesize that retinal microcirculatory changes might be a marke...
Criteria of severity for macular edema associated with retinal vein occlusion: cohort heterogeneity and efficacy evaluation of threshold and subthreshold retinal laser photocoagulation depending on the macular edema severity criteria. Part II.
Background. Macular edema (ME) develops in 60-100% of patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO). ME becomes chronic with a decrease in visual acuity in 1/3-2/3 of patients with RVO-associated ME. The gold standard of ca...
