Assessment of clinical and biochemical features among malignant and benign cases of surgical jaundice

Abstract
Background: Jaundice is a generic term for the yellow pigmentation of skin, mucous membranes, sclera that is caused by a heterogenous group of disorders. During the last decade, our evolving ability has been to image the biliary tract and to establish the diagnosis for jaundice. Methods: The present study was conducted in the surgical wards of Department of Surgery, Darbhanga Medical College. Patients with obstructive jaundice who attended the Surgical out patient’s department or referred from other departments. The time period of the study was from January 2017 to June 2018. The total number of patients were 50. The subject selection was random and only Adult cases were selected for the study. Results: In this study, the use of clinical parameters only detects about 70.2%. There were 20 Malignant 30 Benign Cases of surgical Jaundice. The role of USG alone 54.0%. The role of USG + clinical parameters 85.0%. The role of CT scan was deemed inevitable in cases of malignancy causing obstructive jaundice. Conclusion: The conclude a definite planned management protocol with attention to correct choice of investigations should be adopted in planning treatment of a patient of obstructive jaundice.
