Cost effectiveness of Lichtenstein mesh hernioplasty vs modified Bassini’s repair: A comparative study

Abstract

Background: Inguinal hernia is a leading cause of disability and loss of work. These newer techniques of hernia repair are having lower complication rates, but the cost is too high with non-availability in many areas. Aim: To compare the cost effectiveness of Lichtenstein mesh hernioplasty versus modified Bassini’s repair. Material and Methods: A total of 60 patients with direct and indirect inguinal hernia were divided into two groups:Group A cases underwent repair by Lichtenstein's technique, Group B cases underwent repair by Modified Bassini’s Repair with Tanner’s slide. The cost effectiveness of the both techniques were compared.Results:Group-A proved to be more expensive compared to Group-B with mean cost of surgery in Group-A was Rs. 3300 and Group-B was Rs. 1640.The mean post-operative stay of patient who underwent inguinal hernia repair under Group-A was 8.33 days and Group-B was 8.23 days. Conclusion: Modified Bassini’s repair with Tanner’s slide has a shorter operative time and lower cost than Lichtenstein's technique. Thus, Modified Bassini's with Tanner's slide can be considered to be a better choice in patient with poor financial status.
