A study of risk factors, clinical presentation and management of breast cancer in a tertiary care centre

Abstract
Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. It ranks second in overall cancers. It is related to many risk factors. Breast cancer presents with wide range of presentation from invasive to non-invasive carcinoma. Aim and objective: to study the risk factors, clinical presentation and management of breast cancer in a tertiary care centre. Methodology: 100 patients of diagnosed breast cancer were studied. Data collected with pretested questionnaire. Data collected was demographic characters, clinical presentation, risk factors and management of breast cancer. Data analyzed with appropriate statistical tests. Results and discussion: All patients presented with symptom of lump in breast (100%). 21% patients presented with lump with pain. Infiltrating duct carcinoma was most common (97%) histological type. Most of the patients belonged to stage II (56%) followed by stage I (23%). Mean age of the patient was 52.21±4.6 years. Mean age at menarche was 13.86±1.8 years. Mean age at menopause was 46.3±4.31years. Mean total months of breast feeding were 36.41±5.62. Modified radical mastectomy was offered to 51% patients, while 23% patients had toilet mastectomy.
