Assessment of Disability in Persons with Mental Retardation scale: an Empirical Evaluation
Journal Title: Journal of Disability Management and Rehabilitation - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: Disability assessment in persons with intellectual disability requires intelligence quotient testing by a clinical psychologist. Indian Psychiatric Society has developed Assessment of Disability in Persons with Mental Retardation (ADPMR) scale to assist clinicians in settings where a psychologist is not available. Objective: The present study was planned to explore the usefulness of ADPMR scale. Methods: The study was conducted at a tertiary care state of art institute for persons with intellectual disability in North India. 215 persons with intellectual disability of all age groups, both genders, irrespective of comorbid physical and mental illnesses were enrolled. Assessments on ADPMR were compared with mean intellectual disability. Results: Mean age of participants was 18.3 ± 6.7 years. 73% participants were males and 36.3% had co-morbid physical or mental/behavioural disorders. Mean IQ of the participants was 44.0 ± 14.7. The scale was reliable with high internal consistency and uni-dimensionality of the items (Cronbach’s alpha0.7879), 0.41% sensitivity and 0.78% specificity. Mean IQ and age were significant predictors of variance in ADPMR scores but gender and physical impairment were not. However, 40% children who were eligible for disability benefits as per mean intelligence quotient would not be eligible for the benefits when assessed with ADPMR scale. Conclusions: The ADPMR scale is a valuable tool for assessment of disability in persons with intellectual disability in settings where a clinical psychologist is not available. However, further studies are required to establish its validity and remove inconsistencies.
