Assessment of friction reduction in beta-titanium archwires by heat- induced structural changes

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2015, Vol 11, Issue 2

Abstract

Aim. Friction is a limiting factor in sliding mechanics inOrthodontics. The goal of this study was to test the reductionof friction in Beta-Titanium wires while keeping theirelasticity. Material and methods. 38 groups of Beta IIITitanium (β-Ti) wires underwent 3 series of heat treatment. The characteristic changes in each group were measuredand compared with the original Stainless Steel (S.S) and β-Tiwires. Three point bending test for elasticity, Vickers hardnesstest, as an indirect measurement for surface friction changeswere performed. Result. Of all the wires that underwentheat treatment, one of the series was identified as havingthe most favorable characteristics with a reproducibleoutcome. Conclusion. Production of a wire with elasticitysimilar to β-Ti wires and the surface friction at the level ofthe S.S wires is achievable. More studies are needed in orderto assess its behavior within the oral cavity and under theapplication of orthodontic forces. (Salehi A, Orellana MF,Attarian M, Succaria F, Jones DA.
