Assessment of genetic distance of parental lines of F1 hybrids of winter oilseed rape and its relationship with phenotypic distance and heterosis effect

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2010, Vol 31, Issue 2

Abstract

Selection of parental lines is a very important step of hybrid breeding programmes. Knowledge of the general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability is helpful in the selection of parental genotypes and theoretically greater heterosis effect is achieved by the crossings of lines with significant genetic distance (GD). However, variable results have been obtained by many authors in the studies conducted on different plant materials.Taking this into account, in Heterosis Laboratory investigations of the relationship between genetic and phenotypic distance of parental lines of F1 hybrids, heterosis effect and yielding ability have been initiated.F1 hybrids and their parental lines were investigated in field trials in the design of completely randomized blocs, in four replications, four environments, in crop seasons of 2006/2007, 2007/2008 and 2008/2009. Statistical analysis of seed yield and heterosis effects in all environments has been performed. Moreover the phenotypic distance between parental lines of F1 hybrids using Mahalanobis distance has been evaluated. Genetic distance between parental lines of F1 hybrids has been investigeted using PCR, RAPD and AFLP methods and calculated according to the formula given by Nei and Li (1979). The relationship between seed yield, heterosis, phenotypic and genetic distance has been established by correlation coefficient. It has been stated that the yield of investigated hybrids as well as heterosis effect are not significantly correlated with GD and PD for all investigated breeding materials. Probably it is due to low genetic distance of restorer lines used in investigations, being doubled haploids developed from one genotype BO 20/48.
