ASSESSMENT OF HABITS AND ORAL HYGIENE AMONGST SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN

Abstract
Background: Various surveys on point prevalence have shown that there is persistence of untreated caries amongst children residing at rural areas. It can be due to two reasons either non availability of oral health services or due to lack of awareness about oral health. The aim of the present study is to assess oral hygiene skills and oral hygiene status amongst school going children. Materials and methods: The present prospective study was conducted in the Department Public Health Dentistry, King George's Medical University, Lucknow, U.P., during a period of 1 year i.e. from March 2016 to March 2017. All the students were educated about oral hygiene procedures using various motivational programmes. The procedure of motivation was done in a sequential manner such that it didn’t get boring with period of time. The baseline oral hygiene score was obtained from all the patients using simplified oral hygiene index. All the data was arranged in a tabulated form and analysed using SPSS software. Chi square test was applied to compare baseline oral hygiene results with the oral hygiene results obtained after 4 months. Results: A total of 100 subjects were enrolled in this prospective study, there were 60 males and 40 females in this study. The mean age of the subjects was 10.67 +/- 3.85 years. The baseline mean oral hygiene of the subjects was 2.08 +/-0.53. After a period of 4 months the oral hygiene index improved to 1.11 +/- 0.34. There were 84% children who brushed early in the morning after waking up. 10% of the children brushed teeth after having breakfast Conclusion: School oral health education programme are an asset in preventing caries and promoting good oral hygiene amongst children.
