ASSESSMENT OF IRON PROFILE IN SUDANESE KIDNEY POSTTRANSPLANT PATIENTS -KHARTOUM STATE
Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 7
Abstract
Background: Posttransplantation anemia (PTA) is a common obstacle for kidney post-transplant patients and a risk factor for many complicated consequences. Exposure to the immunosuppressive drug has a role on iron profile changes. The study was performed to assess levels of an iron profile in Sudanese kidney post-transplant patients, compared to control group and show the effect of exposure to the immunosuppressive drug on the profile among patients. Methodology: A case-control study was conducted in Khartoum state, during March 2017, in kidney transplant centers. The participants in the study were 40 patients and 40 apparently healthy controls. Hemoglobin, iron, and ferritin were measured for both groups for comparison and analysis of difference. Results: The mean for hemoglobin was 13.25±2.12 and 14.32 ± 0.79 for patients and controls respectively. The average of ferritin concentration was 192.99±142.1 for patients and 286.30±45.99 for controls. The mean concentration of iron was 16.65±6.82 and 19.35±2.43 for patients and controls respectively. The mean for Tacrolimus level was 7.30±1.92. The Iron, Ferritin, and hemoglobin showed significant correlation with Tacrolimus therapy (P. value <0.05). Conclusion: Anemia is common among kidney Sudanese transplant patients. Monitoring of iron profile level and immunosuppressive drugs is required.
