Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2009, Vol 62, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction: Injuries which are sustained when practising sports, for example cycling, football, basket-ball, skiing, hockey, are common occurrences in dental practice. Patients generally present with crown and root fractures, luxations, avulsions, and soft tissues injuries. Mouth guards are effective in preventing such injuries.Aim of the study: To assess the use of mouth guards by young people practising various sports.Material and methods: Young people aged between 10–16 years used mouth guards during training. These findings were based on a questionnaire survey. Results: Results indicate that there is a genuine interest in preventing sports-related injuries. Custom-made mouth guards seldom produced tenderness of the oral mucosa, nor did they interfere with speech or respiration. Conclusion: It appears that more instruction and education on the ways of protecting the mouth when sports are practised would positively contribute to diminishing the number of consequences and complications of sports-related injuries.
