Assessment of physical activity among students of Physiotherapy at the University of Physical Education and the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice

Abstract

The objective of this work was the specification of the physical activity level among students at the Faculty of Physiotherapy of the University of Physical Education and the Medical University in Katowice as well and a comparison of their annual caloric expenditure. The research involved 40 students of the University of Physical Education in Katowice (20 women and 20 men) and 40 students of the Medical University in Katowice (20 women and 20 men) aged between 20 and 25. Physical activity was assessed by the Minnesota Leisure Time Activity Questionnaire – MLTPAQ, which gathers in-formation on the level of physical activity of an examined person in the last year. Results allowed defining the level of physical activity of the assessed group of Physiotherapy students of both institutions. The level of women’s physical activity of both groups subjected to research and men from the University of Physical Education may be defined as high while the level of a group of men from the Medical University subjected to the research as medium. The highest weekly caloric expenditure characterized a group of men from the University of Physical Education, and the lowest level characterized a group of men from the Medical University. Recreational activity outranked housework in terms of caloric expenditure.
