Abstract

Physical activity appropriate to the conditions of gestation period helps to improve health of mother and better growth of fetus. Based on this, the present study was conducted aiming to determine the effect of physical activity and some of its related factors on the pregnant women who referred to the health centers of Zanjan in 2012. This is a descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study. In this study, 697 pregnant women, who referred to the health centers, were selected through stratified cluster sampling method. The inclusion criterion consisted of experiencing last gestation resulted in childbirth in the gestational age exceeding 20 weeks. The exclusion criteria included uncertainty about gestational age, multiple gestations, and bed rest during gestation period. The data were collected through questionnaires. The results were analyzed by the statistical methods including chi-square, Fisher’s exact test, analysis of variance, and multivariate logistic regression. According to the results of the present research, mean age of the women and mean age of their gestations were 27±3 years and 32±4 weeks, respectively. As far as physical activity was concerned, 7.3% of the women were at an appropriate level. Here, regardless of the financial conditions of the families, with the increase in the education level women, the rate of physical activity increased significantly (p<0.001). The results of the research indicate that the physical activity level of women during gestation period is low. Based on this, it is recommended to the health practitioners to present some training programs to promote women’s activity in women training programs.
