ASSESSMENT OF QUALITY OF ANTE-NATAL CARE PROVIDED IN AL FAYZIAH PHCC BURAIDAH, AL QASSIM REGION, SAUDI ARABIA

Abstract

Introduction: Antenatal care is one of the important element of primary health care as per the Alma Atta declaration 1978. However, regardless of the gestational age at first enrolment, all pregnant women coming to the clinic for antenatal care will be enrolled and examined according to the norms of the Saudi antenatal cards and first visit of WHO and subsequent visits to be planned. Objectives: 1. To To assess the outcomes of Ante-Natal Care activities provided in Al Fayziah PHCC. 2. To determine the high risk pregnancy and other current diseases among Antenatal mothers. 3. To study the infrastructure facilities in the Health centre. Materials & Methods: The present descriptive record review study of medical audit was conducted at Al Fayziah primary health care center (PHCC) among the antenatal women. All data will be extracted from Antenatal care (ANC) card and ANC register in Al Fayziah PHCC. The study involved 151 pregnant women who reviewed the clinic in 4 months from April 2011 to August 2011. Data entered in MS Excel and analyzed with same soft ware. Necessary statistical tests were applied. Results: Out of 151 antenatal mothers, 120 pregnant women (79.4%) received the complete doses of tetanus toxoid vaccine (6 doses) and remaining 31 pregnant women (33.6%) did not receive the complete doses of tetanus toxoid vaccine. All pregnant women (100%) received complete physical examination with ultrasound by well trained female doctor. All pregnant women (100%) received complete laboratory investigations according to standard of quality assurance and Saudi antenatal guideline. All pregnant women (100%) screening was done for Diabetes Mellitus, hypertension and anaemia in each visit. Infrastructure facilities revealed that Comfortable waiting room, Examination room and appropriate drugs for dealing with emergency cases were present. Conclusions: Despite of a high level of antenatal care coverage in primary health care and all pregnant women (100%) complete all necessary laboratory investigations according to standard, still there is a room for improvement, it is recommended to give more attention towards completion of all 4 antenatal visits, Tetanus toxoid coverage, increase the number of well trained female doctors and well trained nurses to provide the best care of pregnant women.
