Assessment of selected speed-strength parameters of muscles in women depending on somatic features and the level of the physical activity
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 5
Abstract
Background. The characteristics of dynamic muscle groups include the isotonic and isokinetic characteristics. The latter was used for the study. The purpose of the study was to assess selected speed-strength parameters of muscles of the trunk and the knee joint in women, depending on somatic features and the level of the physical activity. Material and methods. 40 women (mean age = 23 years) were divided into two groups, depending on the level of their physical activity (I – less active, II – more active). Basic somatic features were measured and speed-strength parameters of muscles of the trunk and the knee joint using Multi dynamometer Joint 3 Biodexsystem, exploiting different angular speeds: 60, 180, 300°/s for a lower limb and 60, 120°/s for the torso. The following parameters were analysed: maximum moment of muscle power [Nm], maximum moment of muscle power to the body weight [%]. Basic statistical parameters were calculated, the significance of differences in the mean values of the analysed parameters were estimated and linear Pearson’s correlation was applied. Results. We demonstrated that studied groups were homogeneous in terms of age and the analysed somatic trades. The results obtained for the knee joint and trunk extensor and flexor muscles suggest that more active persons are characterized by maximum values as compared with the less active persons at every angular speed. Conclusions. The women with higher level of physical activity were characterized by higher values of all measured speed-strength parameters. The isokinetic parameters demonstrated the relationship with somatic features: body mass and height, BMI and the hip circumference.
