Assessment of sports massage effectiveness in reduction of delayed onset muscle soreness of biceps brachii
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. Massage is one of the most popular post exercises treatment. The aim of the study was the assessment of classic hand sports massage effectiveness in reduction of delayed onset muscle soreness of biceps brachii muscle. Material and methods. 30 healthy women aged 18-24 participated in the research. People from the study group (n=16) had 5 post-event classic (sports) massage applications. All the women did upper extremities strength test (International Physical Fitness Test) and training of upper limbs (the same exercises like the test, 5 times 60-80% max). Moreover Visual Analogue Scale and Borg Scale were used as the investigative tools. All the tests were repeated 24, 48, and 120 hours after the training. Differences between the results of individuals were measured by Wilcoxon Test. Differences between the groups were calculated by U Mann-Whitney Test. Results. The weakest result of strength test was observed in the second measurement in the study group and in the third measurement in the control group. Women massaged in the last measurement achieved the highest result, statistically higher (p<0.05) than in other tests. Declared level of pain in the first measurement (3 hours after the training) was similar in both groups. The highest level of muscle soreness was observed in the second measurement in the study group (5.2) and in the third measurement in the control group (6.4).Conclusions. Massage resulted in accelerated regeneration and improvement of fitness of studied muscles. The analgesic effect of massage should be more widely used both in biological regeneration as well as rehabilitation.
