Assessment of workload among nurses working at Saint Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Abstract
Background: Workload is the amount of work an individual has to do. Nurses are the backbone of any healthcare system and their workload is very complex. The widespread nursing shortage and high turnover have become a global as well as a national issue. Methods: Institutional based cross sectional study was conducted at Saint Paul’s hospital millennium medical college on nurses using structured self administered questionnaire which have open-ended and closed-ended questions. The study participants were selected by simple random sampling method. A total of 383 nurses who were present in their work place during the study period have been included in the study. The collected data was entered into Epi-info version7 and then data was exported to SPSS version 20 software for analysis. The relationship between dependent and independent variables was assessed using OR and 95%CI. The significance of association was assessed using p value. Bivairate & multivariate analysis was done to control the effect of confounding variables. Results: The study included 383 nurses and gave a response rate of 94.8%. The mean age of the participants was 27.9years and standard deviation of 5.6 with minimum age of 20 and a maximum of 53 years. The statistical significant factors of workload on nurses were work experience with 95% CI (1.45-6.5) and having sleeping disturbance with 95% CI (1.17-4.20). Conclusion: This study showed that there were workloads among nurses in St.Paul’s hospital millennium medical college. There for, the statistical significant factors of workload on nurses were work experience with 95% CI (1.45-6.5) and having sleeping disturbance with 95% CI (1.17-4.20)
