Abstract
Introduction:This cross-sectional study was performed toinvestigate nutrition literacy of adults living in the city centerof Sivas and the relationship between nutrition literacy andquality of life.Material and Methods:The study sample consisted of384 people. Of the people residing in the houses locatedin 63 neighborhoods in the city center, those who met theinclusion criteria were included in the study. The houseswere selected using the simple random sampling method. The participation rate was 95.5%. Data were collected withthe Personal Information Form, Evaluation Instrument ofNutrition Literacy on Adults (EINLA), and the World HealthOrganization Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL-BREF-TR).To analyze the data, in addition to descriptive statisticalmethods (number, percentages, means etc.), Chi-square,Pearson correlation analysis, the test for the significanceof the difference between two means, one-way analysis ofvariance and Kruskal Wallis test were used. The error ratewas p<0.05.Results:Nutrition literacy levels of 79.8% of theparticipants were determined to be adequate. However, when the sub-scales were analyzed, it was determined that33.5% of the participants’ knowledge on general nutritionwas inadequate, 20.2% had difficulty understanding andinterpreting what they read, 12.8% were not knowledgeableenough about food groups, 88.2% lacked knowledge aboutthe daily serving sizes and 90.3% lacked knowledge onnumerical literacy or reading food labels. A significantcorrelation was determined between the mean nutritionliteracy scores and variables such as gender, educationand profession (p<0.05). A positive, significant but weakcorrelation was found between the mean nutrition literacyscores and the mean scores for the physical, psychologicaland social domains of quality of life (p<0.05).Conclusion:In the city center of Sivas, nutrition literacyrate of the adult population was 79.8%. The mean scoresthe participants obtained specially from the daily servingsizes, food label reading and numerical literacy domainswere inadequate. If they can obtain higher scores from thosedomains, this will enhance their quality of life in physical, psychological and social domains
