Association between Dietary Patterns and Non Verbal Intelligence Quotient among School Age Girls in Tehran

Abstract

Objective: The evidences indicated that nutrition affects intelligence quotient (IQ) in different growth stages. Although some investigations have been done on the relationship between dietary patterns, micronutrients and IQ, there is limited data on this relationship. Therefore, the current research was intended to study the relationship between dietary patterns and non verbal IQ among school age girls. Methodology: using random sampling method, the current cross- sectional study selected 375 girls from primary schools in Tehran. Body mass index, height and weight of all children were measured. One hundred-forty-seven-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was applied to assess dietary patterns. IQ was evaluated by Raven’s standard progressive test. The relationship between dietary patterns and non verbal IQ were assessed using multiple regression analysis. Results: Only healthy dietary pattern scores were significantly related to IQ and no significant association was found between the highest and the lowest tertiles of unhealthy and semi-unhealthy dietary patterns scores with non-verbal IQ. This study also indicated a significant positive correlation between non verbal IQ and height (?= 0.12, P=0.02) but we didn’t find a significant correlation between healthy dietary pattern and non-verbal IQ (?=-0.06,-0.09, P= 0.28, 0.11). Conclusion: According to the results, the dietary patterns didn’t affect on non-verbal IQ. On the other hand, only height was positively related to non-verbal IQ and this supports the fact that the verbal intelligence is more influenced by food quality and dietary patterns than non-verbal intelligence.
