Association between polymorphism in STAT5A gene and milk production traits in Chinese Holstein cattle
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2010, Vol 28, Issue 1
Abstract
STAT5 is a key intracellular mediator of prolactin signaling and can activate transcription of milk proteins in response to prolactin. STAT5 genes are suggested to be candidate markers for milk protein yield and composition in dairy cattle. PCR-SSCP was applied to analyze the polymorphisms of two loci in STAT5A gene in 279 Chinese Holstein cattle. Genotype frequencies, allele frequencies and correlation coefficients between the polymorphic variants and milk production traits were estimated. Three genotypes were found at the two loci. At locus P1 the frequencies of genotypes AA/GG/AG were 0.240/0.147/0.613 and those of alleles A and G were 0.547 and 0.453, respectively. The A/G genotypes had significant effect on milk yield and milk protein content in lactations 1 and 2. At locus P2 the genotype frequencies of CC/TT/CT were 0.752/0.004/0.244 and C and T allele frequencies were 0.875 and 0.125, respectively. Different genotypes had remarkable effect on the milk protein content in lactation 2.

Genotyping of coat color genes (MC1R, ASIP, PMEL17 and MATP) polymorphisms in cold-blooded orses bred in Poland reveals sporadic mistakes in phenotypic descriptions
Equine coat color is an important phenotypic trait, predominantly within the context of correct animal identification. Due to the increased import of horses to Poland during the last years, uncommon coat colors seem to o...
The effect of gamma irradiation and vacuum packaging upon selected quality traits of refrigerated ostrich meat. Part 2. Colour, texture and lipid oxidation properties
Ostrich meat samples were irradiated with 0.0, 1.0 and 3.0 kGy of gamma rays, packaged under vacuum and held refrigerated for 21 days. Lipid oxidation, shear force, colour and sensory quality were determined on day 0, 7,...
Profile of fatty acids and activity of elongase and Δ5 and Δ9 desaturase of growing pigs differ in concentration of intramuscular fat in musculus longissimus dorsi
Pigs of Pietrain (P) and Polish Synthetic line of 990 (S) were slaughtered at 25, 70, 90, 110 and 130 kg BW and the chemical composition of musculus longissimus dorsi and its fatty acid profiles were determined. The Piet...
How “natural” training methods can affect equine mental state? A critical approach – a review
Among equestrians the “natural” training methods of horses are gaining widespread popularity due to their spectacular efficiency. Underlying philosophy of trainers - founders of different “natural horsemanship training”...
Cathepsin mRNA level in bovine cumulus cells fails to be a good marker of oocyte quality
Cathepsins (CTS) are lysosomal cysteine proteinases, of which elevated transcript content is attributed to the reduced quality of oocytes. The aim of this study was to investigate whether transcript content of three CTS...
