Abstract

Asthma is most often manifested for the first time in children and young people. The increase in prevalence of asthma is also observed among the elderly, hence the percentage and number of patients suffering from this disorder is constantly rising in this age group. Some of them create the phenotype of late- onset asthma including the those whose first symptoms appeared in their adult life. All of them have common problems resulting from the advanced age, and those with the late - onset phenotype are in addition, frequently misdiagnosed, and undertreated. Asthma in the elderly (>65 yr old) is associated with more severe course of the disease and higher mortality than asthma in younger patients. Elderly people require a multi-dimensional approach in which general practitioners take a special role. ............................... Astma najczęściej manifestuje się po raz pierwszy u dzieci i ludzi młodych. Wzrost zachorowań odnotowuje się również wśród osób w podeszłym wieku, stąd odsetek i liczba pacjentów cierpiących na to schorzenie w tej grupie wiekowej stale rośnie. Część z nich tworzy fenotyp astmy o późnym początku, tj. takiej której pierwsze objawy pojawiły się w wieku dojrzałym. U wszystkich występują wspólne problemy wynikające z zaawansowanego wieku, a fenotyp o późnym początku jest dodatkowo obciążony znacznym stopniem niedorozpoznawania i związanym z tym brakiem właściwego leczenia astmy. Astma wieku podeszłego (>65r.ż.) charakteryzuje się cięższym przebiegiem choroby i wyższym ryzykiem zgonu niż astma u młodszych pacjentów. Ludzie starzy wymagają wielowymiarowego postępowania, w którym szczególna rola jest przypisana do lekarzy POZ.
