Atopic disorders in school children in Indonesia: A study on characteristics and Helminth infections

Abstract
Background: Atopy predisposes the marked onset of allergic reaction in vast number of IgE response in the peripheral vessels. IgE is increased in patients with atopy, asthma, atopic dermatitis and helminth infections. This study investigated the characteristics and helmith infections that affect children suffering from atopy based on the value total IgE serum. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted in SDN Kampung Baru, Sub district of Kusan Hilir, District of Tanah Bumbu South Kalimantan in March-April 2011. From each child a sample of feces and serum was taken and the data was recorded such as age, sex and parents were interviewed with an ISAAC questionnaire. Feces examined for the presence of worm eggs and ELISA used to determine serum concentrations of total IgE. The collected data were analyzed and presented in descriptive tables 2x2 between two variables. Results: The results of the study showed that the children in the age group 9-11years were more prone to atopy(54%), some children with Ascarislumbricoides infection (2.6%) and Trichuristrichiura infection (13.2%)were not having atopy but in contrast, 34.2% children who had atopy, were not infected with worms. Most children who diagnosed by doctor were not having atopy whereas children who were not diagnosed by the doctor suffering from allergies, having atopy. Conclusion: There was difference result between younger children that were more susceptible to atopy than the older, children with helminth infections were have no atopy and children with no helminth infection were having atopy. Doctor’s diagnoses to allergy symptom were not agreed with atopy status due to difference perceptions of parents.
